Fitness is not simply about how you look or whether you can jump higher or run faster. Physical fitness is actually a condition of well-being and health and, more specifically, your ability to do different parts of physical activities, jobs and sports. Physical fitness is usually achieved through regular physical activity, proper nutrition and adequate rest. Proper nutrition is very important because without it, you cannot build up your muscles and strength and cannot maintain a healthy body weight.

Aerobic fitness is the foundation of most any fitness program and is also the key component of physical fitness. This type of fitness focuses on using the heart and lungs to get rid of calories in your body. It involves various forms of exercises which improves your cardiovascular endurance, improves your metabolic rate and increases your lung capacity. Some examples would be running, bicycling, swimming, rowing, playing volleyball or even jumping rope. Core fitness refers to those types of exercises that strengthen your core muscles, which is your trunk and the muscles that support your spine and your pelvis. Core muscles greatly support your entire body, so you need to make sure that you strengthen these muscles as much as possible in order to achieve optimum physical fitness.

Strength training is another crucial aspect of fitness and involves the use of weight in your hands and/or feet in addition to your body weight. This will improve your muscular endurance, your muscle power and your muscle tone. Examples of strength training would be push-ups, bench presses, pull-ups, chin ups, dips, bodyweight exercises and other strength exercises. There are also exercises that incorporate specific body movements, such as yoga and Pilates. These kinds of fitness workouts will help to improve your flexibility and strengthen your muscles and body.

Cardiovascular fitness involves the overall fitness of your heart and lungs. Examples of cardiovascular fitness workouts would be walking, running, bike riding, jogging, swimming, aerobic dancing and other forms of aerobic exercises. These activities increase your heart rate and increase your oxygen intake. The faster you can get your heart rate to go up, the faster you will be able to reach your fitness goals.
