What is a Diet?
Diet or Dieting has its origin in German, where it means “the eating of meals.” In American, the word “diet” is used interchangeably with “meal replacement” (e.g., “meal replacement shakes” versus “meal replacement bars”) but the term “diet” is actually related to food consumption and eating patterns, while “meal replacement” is purely an effort to replace one’s regular meal times with less expensive, more convenient alternatives.
In government, a diet is a body deliberative body. The term is typically used historically for general assemblies of people, including the German Federal Diet (the legislative assembly of the German empire), and a description for modern day legislative bodies of various countries and states (e.g., the House of Representatives). In some parts of the world, “diet” has been used to refer to a more specific body of people: people who are engaged in certain activities that are considered unhealthy, and who have adopted a regimen of healthy living practices and/or programs, for example in the United States.
In many ways, we use the phrase “diet” to describe anything that we want to lose weight or change the way we eat. A “diet” can be anything from an overall change in lifestyle to the physical activity we partake in on a regular basis to the kinds of food we eat and the amount of time we spend in front of a television set. Even when speaking about losing weight, we tend to focus on the physical aspect: losing weight and keeping it off by cutting out meat and fat.
Although the term “diet” has become so common that we often use it to describe our weight loss plans, there are many variations of this basic concept. When someone talks about a “diet,” they are talking about a general pattern of eating patterns and activities that we engage in over a period of time. The goal of a “diet” is to consume fewer calories than our bodies need on a regular basis, generally to reduce weight. However, it can also be used to describe a group of foods that are thought to be beneficial for reducing weight.
Weight loss is just one type of diet, and it is just one method of how we lose weight. There are other options including a change in our daily routine (e.g., a more healthy diet), the use of certain supplements to help with weight loss, and the use of medications that act on the part of our body to make us feel full. When we discuss a “diet,” the terms used are almost always interchangeable.
It is important to note that there is nothing wrong with exercising, but not all of our favorite celebrities agree with the idea of “dieting” as a good thing. The fact is that eating poorly is not healthy and we should do everything we can to make sure that the things we eat are healthy; even if we do need to lose weight.
