The Basics of Poker

Poker is a card game that involves betting. Players must place chips representing money into the pot (equal to the amount staked by the player before him) if they wish to stay in the hand and have a chance of winning it. Often there are rules in place for how the winnings are shared among players after the game is over.

When you want to increase the amount of your bet after a previous player, say “raise” and the other players can choose to either call your new raise or fold. When you have a strong poker hand and think you can win the round, it’s usually best to raise. This way, you can get more money into the pot and potentially a better poker hand!

After the ante has been placed, the dealer deals out 2 cards to each player. If you have a pair of cards, you can say “stay” or raise your bet. If you have a high value card, like a king, you can raise your bet even further and say “double up.”

The highest hand in poker is a royal flush which includes a 10 of the same suit (clubs, diamonds, hearts or spades) in one rank. Other high hands include four of a kind, straight and flush. The lowest hand is a pair of low cards. There are also a few other card variations of poker that can be played, such as Omaha, Dr Pepper, Cincinnati, Crazy Pineapple and more. Trying out these different variations is a great way to learn the game.
