Typically, poker is played by a group of people around a circular table. The aim of the game is to have the highest hand of cards that can be formed. The players may either bet, match the bet, or fold. If a player is able to form the best hand, he will win the pot. This is also known as the showdown.
A poker hand is made up of five cards. A flush is five cards of the same suit. A straight is five cards in sequential order. A pair is two cards of equal rank. If the pair of equal rank is compared, the second highest odd card is used. This type of hand can also include an overcard, which is a card higher than any other card on the board. A four of a kind is a combination of four cards of the same rank.
The first round of betting begins with the player who has the highest card in his hand. This player is known as the initial dealer. The dealer then deals two cards to each player. The dealer’s turn to bet and to deal passes clockwise to each player.
The second round of betting begins after the flop. Each player is dealt a card, and each player can bet, match the bet, or choose to fold. The player who has the highest card in his hand is the winner of the pot.
The third round of betting begins after the turn. Each player is dealt two cards and can bet, match the bet, choose to fold, or re-raise. If the player who is the last to act does not match the bet, he is said to “drop.” The player who folds can no longer compete for the pot. The player who re-raises will be able to call the opponent’s bet, which will raise his stake to match the opponent’s bet. This player is known as an active player.
The last round of betting, known as the showdown, ends when all remaining players have folded. The last card to be dealt is the river. This card is called a “river” and is the last community card used in the hand.
The highest card in a hand, called the ace, is a trump card. This card cannot count high and low in a straight. However, in a flush, the ace can count high and low. Similarly, a king or queen is a trump card in a straight.
A flush is five cards of the same suit in any order. A straight is five cards in sequential order. In a mixed suit straight, the player uses a sequence of mixed suits. The lowest straight is 5-4-3-2A. The straight starts with the highest card. The straight flush is a flush with five cards in sequential order.
The last round of betting, known simply as the showdown, ends when all remaining cards have been dealt. Each player who is still in the hand is shown his hand, and all the bets are placed in front of him.
